Celebrating Women in Sport

Our vision is to help create a world in which everybody has access to amazing experiences.

As part of this, we look to celebrate voices working to inspire and empower people to participate. March 8th 2022 saw the launch of our first ever International Women’s Day event, a chance for women and men in the sports and outdoors sectors to come together and discuss the future of this amazing industry.

We heard from a star-studded panel about the state of play for women in sports and the outdoors, including Kate Dale, Campaign Director for This Girl Can, Sport England; Josie West, founder of She Flies; Hetty Key, founder of Women in Adventure; and Jordan Guard, founder and managing director of the Women's Sports Alliance.

Meet the panel

The Women's Sports Alliance

Jordan Guard

Jordan Guard is a former U19 international football player and founder of The Women’s Sports Alliance, a global sports content and storytelling platform designed to champion women’s sport and inspire the next generation of talent. The WSA highlights inspirational stories, positive news happenings and insightful interviews from elite athletes and industry experts from around the world.

In her speech, Jordan makes an impassioned case for positive messaging and celebrating the stories we can. She outlines her experience as an international football player, and calls attention to the disparity between the exposure gained by male and female athletes who sit just below the top of their sport.

She Flies Extreme Sports

Josie West

As director of a global tech consultancy, Jose West is at the forefront of the worldwide tech revolution. As if that wasn’t enough, Josie is also an internationally renowned kitesurfer, and the founder of She Flies Extreme Sports.

After coming to understand the science behind the way in which women learn, Josie recognised a need for Extreme Sports coaching to adapt. Launched in 2019, She Flies provides coaching and events around the world for women in extreme sports, with the aim of creating an environment in which women are the default, not the exception.

In her talk, Josie discusses her initial distrust of ‘women in…’ events, and how she came to recognise the need for a female-centric approach to extreme sports.

Data-driven Change

Hetty Key

Hetty Key is the founder of Women in Adventure, an independent research organisation working to increase participation, improve diversity, and widen the accessibility of the outdoors for women. Driven by data, Women in Adventure believe change should be based on more than opinion, and should represent the voices of as many women as possible.

Through her research, Hetty hopes to educate people about the benefits of the outdoors, steer the outdoors industry towards positive change, and promote the open discussion of important topics such as mental well-being.

In her talk, Hetty makes her case for the importance of data when tackling large problems like inclusion or well-being. She also discusses the Women’s Trad Festival, an inclusive rock climbing festival in the Peak District.

Challenging Convention to Change Behaviour

Kate Dale

Feminist and former journalist Kate Dale is responsible for delivering This Girl Can, Sport England’s multi-award-winning campaign. The campaign has been changing the way millions of people think about exercise and physical activity for almost seven years, and has seen 2.8 million more women get active as a direct result.

In her talk, Kate walks us through the story of This Girl Can. Casting our minds back to the state of play in sports marketing back in 2014, when exclusivity was the name of the game, she outlines how This Girl Can, which put real people with real bodies at the centre of its messaging, was born from the success of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
